University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is one of the five best universities in China's mainland. Established in 1958, the first director of the Department of Mathematics of USTC was the well-known mathematician Prof. Luogeng Hua (Loo-keng Hua). A number of noted mathematicians, such as Zhaozhi Guan, Wenjun Wu (Wentsun Wu), Kang Feng, Sheng Gong, Yuan Wang, etc. taught here. In May 2011, the School of Mathematical Sciences was formally established and the first dean is the academician Zhiming Ma. The School of Mathematical Sciences is the first national base for science students' education and key training base for the doctors of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The agreement to establish a China-France Mathematics Talents Class (CFMTC) was designed to promote talent cultivation and international collaboration in the field of mathematics at the beginning of 2019 by USTC, in collaboration with the Jacques Hadamard Mathematics Foundation (Fondation Mathématique Jacques Hadamard, FMJH) and the Mathematical Sciences Foundation of Paris (Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris, FSMP). Under the framework, at least 9 candidates in their fourth year of undergraduate studies at CFMTC will be granted scholarships to pursue doctoral study in France.

As a four-year program, CFMTC will be available to USTC freshmen who are in good standing. After enter the USTC, based on their competition record on mathematics and physics, and the first mathematics exam at USTC, the working committee makes an oral exam to choose about the best 25 students each year. The French language proficiency of CFMTC student who has completed 2.5-year education shall be equivalent to CEFR Level B2. The students will take 2.5 years to complete the study which is equivalent to the 1.75-year preparatory education of France. The courses of the 1.5 years shall be restricted optional and free optional. The public courses remain as usual and physics will be taught specialized. From the second year, some mathematics courses will be given by French mathematics professors. At least nine competitive students will be screened and selected to get scholarship and pursue Ph.D degree in France.

The delegation of USTC, led by the President BAO Xinhe, visits France from October 25 to 27, 2023. During the visit, USTC extends the agreement of CFMTC with FMJH and FSMP, with the cooperation term from January 2024 to December 2028.

Through international selection or concours, total 5 students from 3 Classes (2 students of Class 2019, 1 of Class 2020 and 2 students of Class 2021) have been admitted to Ecole Normale Superieure de Paris (ENS, Ulm), 1 student admitted to Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, and 14 students (3 students of Class 2019, 3 of Class 2020, 4 of Class 2021 and 4 of Class 2022) admitted to Institut Polytechnique de Paris.
